Game 1
Carolina at Hana Maddux had a bad second inning, allowing four hits including a double by Mike Bordick, and it was all Al Leiter needed in posting a two hit shutout. Jeff Cirillo was the offensive star for the Hurricanes with 3 hits, 2 RBI, and 2 stolen bases. 123 456 789 R H

Hana Brother Alan lost game two in last year's world series at Dresden, but Andy carried a 1-0 lead into the 6th. After leadoff singles by Hamilton and DeShields to start the 6th Carolina went to Mike Williams. One out later, Mo Vaughn singled in the tying run (Hana's first run in the series), and an inning later Greg Vaughn (not his brother) singled in the go ahead run. Osuna got out of the inning, and avoided trouble an inning later when Hamilton popped up a suicid squeeze. But Glavine was sailing along, needing 1-2-3 relief help in the 9th from Lightenberg after allowing two leadoff singles.

Carolina Wood pitched well early, allowing three hits over 5 innings, but two were extra base hits which led to runs. Smoltz was pitching in and out of trouble all night, but his luck finally ran out in the sixth when Reggie Jefferson homered to tie it at 2. Mike Williams had another bad outing in the 7th allowing two runs, with Hana taking a 4-2 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Smoltz gave out after 137 pitches and walks to Greer and Kent. Acevedo relieved, but Griffey hit a key 3RHR, putting Carolina up 5-4. The lead didn't last, as Hana's bench produced unlikely homers by Todd Pratt and Bip Roberts for the win. 123

Carolina Hana was coasting with a 4-0 lead after five and half, on their way to a 3-1 series lead, when the Hurricanes woke up. Kent homered home two in the sixth and another run scored on Petagine's double when Taubensee dropped the throw to the plate. Down 4-3, Cordero and Cirillo started the 7th off Ricky Bones (first playoff appearance for anybody but the big 6); one out later Radinsky was brought in to face Kent, but Rey Sanchez delivered a key hit to tie it. Acevedo came in to retire the side, but allowed an unearned run in the 8th on Reggie Jefferson's single after a two out error by Caminiti. Juan Gonzalez went 4-4 for the Storm, with a homer and two doubles. 123

Stinging from a game 1
blanking, the Storm came out determined to get to Leiter early.
They got one on Mo Vaughn's leadoff homer in the 2nd and another on a solo shot by Alicea
in the 5th. That would be all the
scoring for the Storm. Leiter goes 8.2 for the 4-2 win over Maddux
and the Storm. The Canes scored single runs in the 3rd and 5th on
two-out hits from Greer and Cirillo. Tied at 2 in the 7th,
Jefferson led off with a single to right, and Leyritz followed with a
two-run shot to LF. Eventual WS MVP Leiter retired the first two
hitters in the 9th but allowed a two-out walk to Walbeck. Canes
manager went to Howry, who brought the anxiety level up
by allowing a single to Caminiti, moving Walbeck to 2nd. Greg
Vaughn pinch hit for Guiterrez. Howry responded by going to a full
count before striking him out to preserve the win.

Wood going on 3 days
rest knew he would not be around for the end. After the Canes went
meekly in the 1st, Hamilton singled and DeShields walked bringing up
Juan Gonzalez. In what might have turned out to be one of the
biggest plays of the game, he grounded into a tailor made 463
double-play...saving a bunch of runs when Mo Vaughn
followed with a long two-run shot to RF. Wood struggled thru the
next three innings before giving way to Osuna after a leadoff walk in
the 5th, having thrown 97 pitches at that point. Meanwhile the
Canes snuck a run across in the 4th when Glavine threw an attempted
pickoff throw at 2b into CF. Segui followed with a grounder to
short to score Miller at home. The pivotal inning however came in
the Canes 5th when Phillips walked with two outs and Greer singled him to
3rd. With Griffey up and two out, Storm manager made a daring
move, intentionally walking the then 2 for 23 Griffey to load the bases
(he ended up 2 for 25). Damian Miller's grounder to Gutierrez was kicked
into LF allowing an unearned run to score with 2-outs. Sanchez
plated two more with a grounder up the middle. The Canes bullpen
held the Storm to 1 more run thru the 8th, Mike Williams striking out
the side in the 8th. Howry started the 9th by walking pinch hitter
Roberts and the Storm had the tying run up with Juan, Mo, and Greg.
Juan forced Roberts at second, Mo flied easily to CF and Greg hit a one
hopper to Cirillo to end the game. Canes win 5-3.
