[History][Miller Divisional][Conference][Home]

Rosehaven River Dogs (98-64) vs Carolina Hurricanes  (96-66) Tidewater Tides (97-65) vs Savannah Generals (105-57)
Game 1 - Rosehaven at Carolina
Ismael Valdes (19-6) vs Dave Burba (20-5)
Questionable call for Canes skipper, but Burba was a 20 game winner and had outstanding results.  The Canes were cruising with a 3-1 lead in the 4th when Rolen ripped a 3 run shot to give the RDogs a lead that lasted till the 7th when Greer knocked in a run on a chopper to short....Griffey followed with a rocket to right to give the Canes the lead at 6-4.  A solo homer by Jeter in the 9th was not enough  against Benitez and the Canes held on to the 6-5 win.

Game 2 - Rosehaven at Carolina
David Cone (12-13) vs Curt Schilling (12-7)
Locked into a pitchers duel, Schilling protected a 1 run lead till the RDogs tied it in the 7th on a Piazza solo shot.  Canes manufactured a run in the 7th on a SF by KYoung.  Everything looked great till Piazza hit a 2-out, 2-run homer in the top of the 9th off a rested but rusty Benitez.  Timlin was perfect in the 9th for the final 3-2 RDog win.

Game 3 - Carolina at Rosehaven
Al Leiter (8-14) vs Woody Williams (12-8)
Canes were reeling from the game 2 shocker but reeled off back to back homers from Griffey and Young in the 1st for a 3-0 lead.  After that it was all RDogs.  RDogs came back with one in the 1st and 3 in the 2nd, highlighted by an astounding at bat by Woody Williams.  He fouled off seemingly dozens of pitches on a full count to finally single off Leiter.  Though the runner was thrown out at home, the top of the order was so inspired afterwards, they scored 3 runs with two men out.  That seemed to take the wind out of the Canes and they never recovered enough to catch the RDogs, who settled in for a final 8-4 win.

Game 4 - Carolina at Rosehaven
Kirk Reuter (12-7) vs Hideo Nomo (13-8)
Down by a game, Rueter took the mound for the Canes.  Pitching out of jam after jam, the Canes led 6-3 in the 6th when Rueter departed.   His gut-check pitching and a 4-4, 2 double/triple performance by Burnitz led the Canes to a series tying 8-3 win. Nomo just didn't have it, allowing 9 hits including back to back 5th inning HRs to Griffey and Young.

Game 5 - Rosehaven at Carolina
Ismael Valdes  vs Dave Burba
All Valdes.  A solid 7 inning/100 pitch performance completely shutdown the Canes attack.  He scattered 7 hits in his stint, turning it over to Timlin to nail it down in the 9th for a 4-1 win.  Palmeiro was instrumental in all 4 RDog runs, scoring 1 and driving in 3.

Game 6 - Rosehaven at Carolina
Cone vs Schilling
Cone was magnificent through 7, shutting down the Canes on just 2 hits.  Sosa supported him with 2 long home runs and the River Dogs led 5-0 six outs away from the Conference finals. In the home 8th, Kent led off and was plunked by Cone, followed by a pinch single by Redmond.  Dogs went to Magnante who threw a wild pitch, then walked Trammell.  That brought Wendell for Rosehaven, after which the Canes hit for Sadler with Mieske.  Mieske fanned, but Cirillo singled in two, and following a walk to Greer, Wendell allowed by a bases loaded-clearing double by Series MVP Ken Griffey Jr to tie it. One out later, Burnitz drove in Griffey for the improbable  6-5 Cane lead. Benitez was solid in the 9th for his second save.  This set up the second consecutive dramatic game 7 showdown between the two clubs.

Game 7 - Rosehaven at Carolina
Leiter vs Williams.
Not the starting pitcher either manager preferred, but best rested pitchers available. The game featured 4 lead changes in the first 6 innings.  It was a game full of drama, lead changes, interesting hitter-pitcher matchups and adjustments.  The River Dogs hammered 5 home runs (4 solo shots), but made 4 miscues allowing 4 unearned innings.  The Canes scored 6 runs in the last 3 innings, highlighted by a 2 run double from KYoung in the 6th, a solo HR by Kent in the 7th, and a two-run double by Kent again in the 8th.  Benitez retired all 6 batters he faced in the 8th and 9th, fanning 4.

Game 1 - Tidewater at Savannah
Orel Hershiser (17-8)  vs Randy Johnson (15-12)

Tides outlasted the Generals as the Generals could manage no more than 6 hits over 12 innings. After Marty Cordova tied up the game at 3 with a 7th inning RBI single, the Generals went hitless against three Tidewater relievers. Meanwhile, the Tides couldn't do much better, although Trevor Hoffman had to come in to get Juan Gonzalez with two on in the 10th. Finally, in the 12th, Doug Glanville misplayed John Olerud's pinchhit flyball, allowing it to drop and score Brady Anderson. Gonzalez followed with an RBI single for an insurance run and that was that.

Game 3 Savannah at Tidewater
James Baldwin (12-10) vs Mike Hampton (18-10)

Todd Zeile hit a three run homer in the 4th, and the Generals finally caught up on a 2 run Sandy Alomar double following a couple of walks. But the Generals bats fell silent, getting only 4 hits in 8 innings off Tidewater ace Mike Hampton. Savannah cycled through most of their bullpen, finally losing in the 10th. Brady Anderson singled and an inning later went to second when Canseco walked. Trevor Hoffman came in but hit John Olerud, and Zeile's grounder was booted by Royce Clayton, scoring Anderson with the gamewinner.

Game 4 -Savannah at Tidewater
Ienny Neagle (7-1) vs Roger Clemens (14-10)
A back and forth game with the Tides tying in the 3rd and 5th innings and the Generals coming back to tie in the 8th. Tony Grafannino's tied it with a single, and Danny Graves came in to face Clayton with one out and runners on the corners. Clayton's grounder produced a fielder's choice out at the plate, and pinchhitter Cordova struck out. Graves and Hoffman sailed through until the bottom of the 10th, when Hoffman ran out of steam, allowing singles to Darren Fletcher, Gonzalez, and Olerud, and the Tides were up 3-1.

Game 5 Savannah at Tidewater
Johnson vs Hershiser

Rain delays forced both starters after one, and that cost the Generals. Jason Johnson couldn't hold a 2-0 lead, allowing a HR by Zeile in the 2nd and RBI singles to Vizquel and Edgar Martinez in the 4th (around an error by Ron Belliard). Savannah bats were quiet again, managing only 5 hits against a half dozen Tidewater pitchers, and the Tides upset the division winners 4 games to 1.

Generals   200 000 001   3  5 2
Tides      010 021 02x   6 14 1

MVP - Danny Graves, who won 3 games, and pitched 6 2/3 hitless innings. Edgar Martinez went 5-8 on the series with 4 RBIs, and Trevor Hoffman pitched effectively in all 5 games, despite being hung with the loss in game 3. The goat was Bagwell, who hit .063 with a lone HR in 16 at bats. The real problem was the Savannah defense, which committed 8 errors in 5 games, good for 7 unearned runs. Belliard, Clayton, and Glanville each committed 2 errors.
