1999 Miller Divisional Playoffs
Hana vs Dresden; Sydney vs Antioch
[History][Conference][Fehr Divisional][Home]

Dresden Blacks (105-57) vs Hana Storm (93-69) Antioch Wizards (116-46) vs Sydney Dodgers (91-71)
Game 1 - Dresden at Hana
Kevin Millwood (23-5) vs Greg Maddux (12-8)

At Country Stadium, Maddux gave Millwood a lesson in pitching, scattering 4 hits in the first 7 innings. Millwood had pitched well, but had allowed Hana to bunch a couple of hits, a sac fly, and a walk in the fourth, good for two runs. In the visitors eighth, Tony Fernandez doubled, and went to third on a ground ball. Maddux had thrown 109 pitches so Hana went to Dennis Cook to pitch carefully to Mark McGwire. Too carefully: Big Mac walked. Pinch hitter Roberto Kelly managed a sac fly to cut the margin to 1, and then Tony Batista shocked the Hana crowd with a two run blast. Jason Christianson and Jeff Zimmerman silenced the Storm the rest of the way.

Game 2 - Dresden at Hana
Brad Radke (9-12) vs Tom Glavine (14-8)

More or less a replay of game 1, with the Blacks rallying with three runs in the eighth coming from behind against Cook. Boggs' single and Darrin Jackson's throwing error provided the Storm two first inning runs, but Jackson got one back on a single in the second. Glavine coasted, allowing three singles through 7, but left after Fernandez and Jackson led off the 8th with hits. Jose Santiago got one out, but when Dresden pinchhit in the 9 spot with LHB Henry Rodriguez, Hana went back to LHP Cook. Didn't matter, as Henry Rodriguez singled to tie, and Craig Biggio followed with a single to take the lead. Larry Walker broke an 0-7 with an RBI single for an insurance run, one the Blacks would need when Jeff Zimmerman had a shaky 9th.

Game 3 - Hana at Dresden
Osvaldo Hernandez (13-11) vs Darren Dreifort (15-5)

Rematch of game 4 of 1998's Conference final, in which Osvaldo won 3-1. This time, it was Dreifort winning 3-1, although at one point he didn't look like he was going to survive the first inning. Dreifort had walked 3 in a row, getting his only out on Delino Deshields'  misadvised advancement on a near wild pitch. But Dreifort recovered to get the last two outs. Dresden scored the easy way in the 1st, on Walker's two run homer. It was to be enough, as the Storm could only scratch together a 6th inning on Mo Vaughn's sac fly. Walker added a sac fly in the 8th for a 3rd run. The Dresden relief was flawless in the last three innings, as the Blacks took a 3-0 series lead.

Game 4 - Hana at Dresden
Livan Hernandez (10-17) vs Todd Stottlemyre (7-3)

Little brother Livan reverted back to his early season performance with Madiba, as the Blacks broke through with 6 second inning runs. Loading the bases with none out the Blacks got one on an infield out, one on a wild pitch, and one on Stottlemyre's single. Loading them up again, Boggs then flubbed a McGwire grounder, and Henry Rodriguez doubled home two more. Stottlemyre had another RBI single an inning later. Hana put together 3 hits and a walk in the 5th, but could only manage 1, as Mo Vaughn (1-14 on the series) struck out with the bases loaded.

Storm  000 010 000   1  9 1

HAN - LHernandez (L,0-1), Haney (2), Mendoza (3), Mahomes (5), Santiago (7); DRE - Stottlemyre (W,1-0), Rosado (8)

MVP - Larry Walker, for going S, HR, S, W, SF, S, S, S, S from the 8th inning of game two through the 6th inning of game 4. An honorable mention to Todd Stottlemyre for his 7 inning performance with 2 RBIs in game 4. Goats were Dennis Cook and Mo Vaughn for the Storm, but McGwire also weighed in with an RBI-less 1 for 15 series. Storm had a team O+S of .512.

Game 1 - Sydney at Antioch
Jose Lima (18-11) vs Pete Harnisch (18-5)

Pete Harnisch and two relievers combined on a five hitter, outdueling Jose Lima to win 1-0. Antioch pushed across a run in the bottom of the 4th when Edgardo Alfonzo doubled, stole third, and scored on an infield out. Outside of Chris Singleton who advanced to 3rd in the 1st inning on an error, no Dodger managed to get past second base.

Game 2- Sydney at Antioch
Omar Olivares (14-7) vs Russ Ortiz (12-11)

Four relievers shut down the Dodgers over the last three and two thirds innings to preserve a 4-3 win for Antioch. The Wizards had gotten out to a 4-0 lead on a two run homer by Matt Stairs and a two run double by Todd Helton an inning later. Sydney finally broke a 14 inning scoreless streak in the sixth with a two run shot by Chris Singleton, followed one out later by a Raul Mondesi solo HR. But that was only 4-3, and the Dodgers could only manage a lone single from there.

Game 3 - Antioch at Sydney
Chris Carpenter (12-3) vs Jose Guzman (12-12)

An old fashioned blow out, as the Wizards jumped on Guzman early with first inning homers by ARod and Sweeney. Carpenter scattered 4 hits until the ninth, when he tired, but the game was long out of reach for the Dodgers by then.

Game 4 - Antioch at Sydney
Scott Elarton (13-5) vs Lima

Scott Elarton outdueled Lima to complete the sweep, allowing five singles and a double over eight innings. Singles by Helton and Stairs in the first, and by Sweeney in the third gave the Wizards enough for the staff to work with.
