Game 1 - Antioch at Vienna Scott Elarton (13-1, 1-1) vs Pedro Martinez (26-1, 1-0) With two outs and nobody on in the third and the pitcher hitting, Pedro, who had won 27 of 28 decisions this year, all of a sudden lost it. Single, walk, Alfonzo 2R2BH, Helton 2RHR, and ARod HR and it was all of a sudden 5-0. Pedro had given up only one 5 run inning all year (SJB 8/10: HRs by Will Clark, Ventura, Jay Bell). Penguins got back to 5-2 in the fourth and loaded the bases with two out, let Pedro hit and he stranded them. It was Vienna's last major hurrah. Antioch had a little fun with the bullpen, and won going away 9-2.

Antioch at Vienna One of the most entertaining games in IIBL playoff history. Wright pitched well for Vienna, allowing only two singles in five innings, but left for a pinchhitter in the 6th, up 1-0. Terry Adams allowed a HR to Nevin to tie it, and it proceeded 1-1 until the 8th. With one out, Arthur Rhodes came in to face Chavez, but Vienna went to Truby, who doubled in the goahead run. Giambi doubled in an insurance run, but it turned out not to be enough insurance against Todd Helton's two run double in the ninth against new pitcher Kelly Wunsch. Vienna almost won it in the bottom of the 9th, but Wunsch, who singled, was thrown out at the plate trying to score from 1st on a Ramon Martinez double. Antioch broke through in the 11th on Todd Pratt's two run single following an error and an ARod double, but Mike James, the 5th Antioch pitcher, couldn't hold it either. Walk, error, wild pitch, and two run single, even before an out was recorded, tied the score. A nifty 3-6-3 DP turned in by Helton averted further damage. Vienna had a couple of runners on in the 12th, but the Wizards went to Swindell to face Giambi. Antioch countered with Eric Davis, but he lined out and Nomar grounded out. Finally in the 13th, ARod hit a 2 run homer off Bohanon, and Vienna went 1-2-3 to end it.

Vienna at Antioch Burba came up big, just as he had in Dresden in his earlier start. He allowed only two hits, one unearned run, and no walks over 7 innings. Andy Pettitte only allowed three hits in his 8 innings of work, but that included a 2 run double by Eric Davis in the 4th, and a solo Garciaparra homer in the 5th (breaking an 0-11). Nelson Cruz had a forgettable ninth for the Wizards, when the Penguins added 3 more.

H E Game 4 -
Vienna at Antioch Vienna, trying to even the series in advance of Pedro Martinez pitching game 5, used 5 pitchers in the sixth inning... to no avail. Vienna had taken a 2-0 lead in the 5th off Brett Tomko centered around doubles by Crespo and Chavez. In the 6th, Herges who had allowed 1 hit over the first 5 innings, allowed single, walk, single to Counsell, Palmeiro, and Alfonzo. Bruce Bohanon came in and got Helton to bounce into a force, but Vienna couldn't turn the DP. Terry Adams then came in to face the right handed ARod. A wild pitch brought in the tying run, and ARod then singled Helton to third. Remlinger came in to face Salmon, and walked him loading the bases. McCarty pinchhit for Grieve, but the lefty pitcher was removed for Mike Fetters. Danny Bautista had the key hit, a bases clearing double, making it 5-2. Antioch went on from there to win 8-2 and take a 3-1 series lead.

H E Game 5 -
Vienna at Antioch Elarton outdueled Martinez again, winning the series for the Wizards. Pedro may have struck out 12 and Scott only 3, but Antioch hit in the clutch. Antioch's first run came in on 3rd inning doubles by Bautista and Hocking, while Bautista's double in the 5th was the focal point of a two run rally. Vienna got one back in the 6th, but Swindell came in to retire pinchhitter Jeff Conine with two on and two out in the 6th. Vienna had the tying runs in scoring position in the 9th, but Gabe White got Ochoa on a fly to short center, and Trot Nixon stuck out to end the series.

H E MVP: Scott Elarton. The conventional choice would have been A-Rod, who went 8-20 with 2 HRs. The slightly unusual choice would have been Danny Bautista, who went 5-14 with four doubles and two very clutch hits, but Scott beat Pedro twice and posted a 2.02 ERA against the conference's leading offense... A good argument could be made for Greg Swindell, who won two games and held another... Vienna suffered from a power shortage during the series: only Nomar and Ochoa hit homers over the 5 games, and there were no triples, and a team slugging percentage of .310... But blame also has to go to the quick hook: Vienna relief allowed 22 hits in 18 innings, contrasted with the 7 hits in 16 innings posted by the non-Pedro 2-3-4 starters. |
Game 1 - Rosehaven at Madiba Woody Williams (10-5, 0-0) vs Al Leiter (14-8, 1-1) Rosehaven built a 7-2 lead behind Woody Williams' pitching and Woody Williams' hitting. Williams doubled in a run in the 2nd and homered with a man aboard an inning later. Derek Jeter's three run homer left the River Dogs in cruise control. However, Giles cut it to 7-5 with a 2 run shot in the 8th, and Hidalgo hit a 2 run shot to bring it to 8-7, but Jeff Tam came on to get Jeff Kent for the final out 123 456 789 Game 2 -
Rosehaven at Madiba Madiba scored 4 times in the first on only 1 hit, a three run Posada home run. Rosehaven answered back with three solo home runs, but spoiled chances in the 5th and 6th after getting their leadoff man on. But United pulled away later on on home runs by Delgado and Bordick and evened the series with a 7-5 win. 123 456 789 r h e Game 3 -
Madiba at Rosehaven Stewart led off with a homer for Madiba, but they were able to score again. Rosehaven equalized in the 3rd on Piazza's double, but they were also unable to score in regulation. Paul Wilson threw a hitless 7th 8th and 9th innings for United, but United was unable to get a man past first. In the 10th, Jeter led off with a walk, and moved to 3rd on a bunt and a wild pitch. Rick White got Piazza for the second out, but Bruce Chen came in to get the lefty Edmonds, and didn't.

H E Game 4 -
Madiba at Rosehaven Madiba led early, on a three home run second inning, and a Ponson suicide squeeze in the 4th. Ponson loaded the bases in the 5th, but got Sosa to pop to Delgado. After he allowed double, single, and walk in the 6th, Rich Garces came in to face pinchhitter Benito Santiago. He singled, loading the bases, and Jeter's double cut it to 5-4. A wild pitch tied it. But lefty Brian Ward, leading off the 8th, allowed hits to lefties Palmeiro and Goodwin, and left in favor of Jose Jiminez. Jeter singled in the go-ahead run, and with two outs Sosa walked with the bases loaded. It was an important insurance run, since Madiba had the tying runs on base in the 9th but could only get 1.

H E Game 5 -
Madiba at Rosehaven Rosehaven had an easy time of it, after two close losses. The team's two lefties, Palmeiro and Edmonds, each had early three run homers off of Madiba's lefties, and the rout was on. Madiba closed to 10-5 by the end, but it was over fairly early

H E MVP: Woody Williams, for his 2 win, 3 RBI performance... Rosehaven's offense was pretty well spread around, with 7 different Dogs homering... Sammy Sosa was not among the 7, but Tom Goodwin and Williams were. Williams had outhomered Goodwin 3-0 over the regular season... Nine different United players homered and 11 homers were hit in the 5 game series. Madiba's offense seemed to be a matter of standing around waiting for someone to hit one out: 19 of Madiba's 26 runs were scored via the long ball... Brian Giles was the goat, going 1-19, with the 1, of course, being a home run... Rosehaven left handed pitchers were 6-14 with 2 home runs against Madiba's lefthanded pitchers. Overall, Rosehaven hit .455 against the three lefties, who as a group, gave up 18 earned runs in 8.1 IP... Dave Veres, Madiba's closer over the first half, failed to make the post season roster.
