Rosehaven River Dogs (105-57) vs
Maui Stingrays (100-62)
Portland Crush (93-69) vs Rio Salado Scorpions (109-53)

Game 1 - Rosehaven at Maui

Hideo Nomo (13-12) vs David Wells (19-5)

Jim Edmonds and Mike Piazza were not in the starting lineup, but Derek Jeter had 4 hits and Scott Rolen drove in seven runs. Maui got out to an early lead, but David Wells would wind up taking one for the team. The game was 6-3 in the 6th, when Rolen's grand slam off Wells put the game out of reach.

Game 2 - Rosehaven at Maui
Ryan Franklin (16-9) vs Jamie Moyer (14-10)

Jamie Moyer cooled off the Rosehaven bats, allowing four singles over eight and a third innings. Aramis Ramirez homered in the second for the Stingrays' first run, and Moyer's single provided a fifth inning insurance run. Only in the 9th did Rosehaven get more than one runner on base, on consecutive Moyer walks, but Armando Benitez got Edmonds to fly to right and Piazza struck out to end the game.

Game 3 - Maui at Rosehaven
Mark Buehrle (18-4) vs Tomo Ohka (13-10)

The heart of the Rosehaven lineup erupted for 3 quick runs in the home sixth, breaking open a 3-3 tie. Scott Rolen led off the inning with a double, scored on Sammy Sosa's single, and Raffy Palmiero followed with a 2 run homer. Defense was ultimately the difference as Maui committed three errors and Rosehaven turned three double plays.

Game 4 - Maui at Rosehaven
Eric DuBose (3-2) vs Kyle Lohse (16-7)

DuBose only started once in the regular season for the Stingrays, but came up with a good start in the playoffs... to no avail. Maui had taken a 3-1 lead in the sixth on RBI singles by Damian Jackson and Jose Guillen, but the bullpen's wildness in the bottom of the seventh cost the Stingrays the game. With one out pinchhitter Mike Piazza and Derek Jeter walked against Scott Sullivan. Ageless John Franco came on and walked pinchhitter Craig Biggio to load the bases. A wild pitch to Scott Rolen made it 3-2 and he was walked to reload the bases. Jack Cressend came on and got Sammy Sosa to bounce out, but Maui couldn't turn the DP and the game was tied. Not long, as Raffy Palmiero doubled home two, and Maui held on for a 5-4 win, taking a 3-1 series lead.

Game 5 - Maui at Rosehaven
Jason Johnson (16-5) vs
Nomo

Maui went with their first righty starter in the playoffs. Jason Johnson couldn't find the strike zone, walking four straight to open the second. John Franco relieved and was greeted by a two run single by Mike Piazza. Rey Ordonez (Rey Ordonez !) hit his second homer of the game to narrow the game to 3-2, and Franco held his own until Piazza hit a 2RHR in the sixth. But the Maui offense couldn't break through against Nomo, and Rosehaven defeated Maui 4 games to 1.

MAU - Johnson (L,0-1), Franco (2), Sullivan (7), Benitez (8); RIO - Nomo (W,2-0), Isringhausen (9)(S,2). HR - MAU: Ordonez 2(2); RRD: Piazza (1).

MVP - Derek Jeter. 10-18 in the playofffs, a team high 6 runs scored, a .619 ob%, and anchored a defense that turned in 8 double plays in the five game series. Hideo Nomo won two games, but was staked to some pretty good leads... Sammy Sosa went one single for 19 in the playoffs, and Manny Ramirez had 2 singles in 17 AB... Maui wasn't able to get deep into the Rosehaven bullpen all series, as the River Dogs only threw 8 relief innings.

Game 1 - Portland at Rio Salado
Kelvim Escobar (19-3) vs Esteban Loiaza (18-6)

Ichiro led off the bottom of the first with a double and scored one out later on a Marlon Byrd single. That was it. Rio Salado failed to get a hit after the 3rd, while Portland had two hits overall, and only got one batter past second base all day.

Game 2 - Portland at Rio Salado
Matt Morris (10-9) vs Javier Vazquez (15-9)

In contrast to game 1, when 1 run was enough for a win, Portland couldn't have had this with 2 touchdowns and a field goal. The Scorpions scored early and often, and Ichiro went 6-6. The top 4 in the order went 14-21 with 15 RBIs. Ouch.

Game 3 - Rio Salado at Portland
Carlos Zambrano (13-5) vs John Burkett (10-9)

The Crush pinchhit for Burkett in the 5th and the bullpen ran into trouble immediately thereafter. Byrd and Soriano led off the 6th with hits off Joe Nathan, and a wild pitch and lineout brought on Sterling Hitchcock. Blalock hit a sac fly to break the tie, and Hitchcock fumbled a grounder to bring in the second run. Two more insurance runs were added in the 9th to give Rio Salado a 3-0 series lead.

Game 4 - Rio Salado at Portland
Joel Piniero (14-6) vs Escobar

Escobar, pitching on three days rest, threw 5 shutout innings, and the bullpen did the rest. Juan Encarnacion's 5th inning homer was the only run of the game. Billy Wagner had a hairy save, allowing the first two runners to reach in the ninth, but getting pinchhitter Brian Buchanan to hit into a game ending double play.

Game 5 - Rio Salado at Portland
Loaiza vs Burkett

Loaiza got within an out of pitching his second series shutout. Portland, having lost the confidence of Matt Morris, allowed John Burkett to pitch on one day's rest. He threw 5 fine innings but left down 1-0 on Soriano's HR in the 4th. After Burkett left, Joe Nathan had a go, but Benito Santiago launched a 2 out 3RHR in the 6th. That was more than enough for Loaiza, who allowed only 3 hits while striking out 11 in a complete game win.

           123 456 789   R  H  E
Scorpions  000 103 000   4  7  1
Crush      000 000 001   1  3  0
RIO - Loaiza (W,2-0); POR - Burkett (L,0-1), Nathan (6), Mota (7), Wagner (9). HR - RIO: Santiago (1), Soriano (1).

MVP - Loaiza. Two complete game victories without an earned run. Portland only managed 6 runs in 5 games, and 4 of them were in the 18-4 blowout loss. Portland middle relief was awful, allowing 16 runs in 9 innings. Joe Nathan was horrible in high leverage situations. Ichiro was the offensive star, 10-22 with 5 runs and 5 RBIs. On the Portland side only Carl Everett (.294) and Ray Durham (.214) were able to hit better than .200, as the team posted a team O+S of .454.
