Scottsdale at
Camano Island Down 3-0, Camano Island turned to their rookie fiirst round pick, Felix Hernandez. He and former first round pick turned in identical 5 inning, 5 hits, 2 run performances. Camano got their two on a Dustin Mohr 2RHR in the 5th, but Scottsdale tied it quickly in the 6th. A single and a walk brought up Matt Lawton who singled to make it 2-1 with runners on the corners. Camano tried to cut off the tying run on a grounder to Adam Everett but failed and it was 2-2, and Felix was gone. Cougars loaded the bases in the 7th with 2 outs but Craig Monroe grounded out. Camano had a runner on 2nd with one out in the 9th, but Al Reyes came in and got Everett and Delucci. And Everett (0-15 in the series) again grounded out with 2 on in the 11th. Finally in the 12th, Chris Hammond wasn't up to his third inning and walked Atkins and allowed a double to Bobby Keilty. Closer Doug Jones came in but allowed two sac flies and the Cougars led 4-2. Camano got one back in the bottom of the inning on a Soriano homer, but otherwise went quietly, getting swept in the series 4 games to none.
123 456 789 012 R H E MVP - Tony Clark. 5-14, 2 HRs, and 5 walks, leading the team with 4 RBIs. He outshone his counterpart at 1B, Richie Sexson, who had a dreadful 1-16 series. Camano's Adam Everett was worse; he went 0-15. The Cougars pinchhitting brigade went 6-10 with 3 doubles and a homer in the series, while Camano Island went 0-7 with a walk. Scottsdale seemed quite ready for the Camano lineup in the middle innings, with Tony Batista pitching to the righties followed by Ron Villone pitching to the lefties. It was successful, as they plowed through 16 batters without allowing a hit. A sweep was a bit of a surprise, but Scottsdale looked to have all the answers while the Wormburners had none.

Game 1 - Seoul at Kissimmee Roy Oswalt (15-9) vs Johan Santana (20-6) Santana was the story, allowing 3 hits, 2 walks, and no runs, while striking out 10 in 6 innings work. Kissimmee got greedy in the 6th. Up two, they pinch hit with John Mabry with one out 1st & 3rd and he hit into a pop up double play. Kissimmee had to navigate through the middle relief, and the outcome wasn't settled until the Cards got two insurance runs in the 8th on Jose Lopez's pinch hit single and a Matt Wise balk.

Game 2 - Seoul at Kissimmee Johnson continued the Cards' strong starting pitching by scattering 6 hits over 8 innings.Haren was better, allowing 4 hits, no walks, and 10Ks over 7, but the difference was Johnny Damon's 2RHR in the 3rd, which opened a 3-1 Kissimmee lead and proved the difference. Hafner led off the Seoul 9th to make it 3-2, and Gomes singled with two out, but Linebrink came on to get Jorge Posada for the save and a 2-0 Kissimmee lead.

Game 4 - Kissimmee at Seoul Johnson got through the Seoul lineup the first time without damage, but in the home third it was brutal, as the Fighters went 8-9 the second time through. The big blow was Posada's three run shot to right, turning it from 4-0 to 7-0. But Mark Ellis continued the carnage against R.A. Dickey, adding a 2RHR to make it 9-0 after three. It wasn't over though. Moyer tired in the 5th, walking home a run and allowing a sac fly, and in the 6th 5 straight hits capped by Jose Vidro's homer made it 9-7. Juan Rincon came on, shakily loaded the bases, but got pinchhitter John Mabry with the bases loaded. The rest of the way the bullpen was a little more stable as Seoul evened the series at 2 games apiece.

Game 6 - Seoul
at Kissimmee Back in Shea, the Cardinals tried to forget about the drubbing at Seoul, and the teams hung close. Haren was shaky, allowing 5 hits and 5 walks in 5 innings, but left down only 2-1, a deficit that was made up immediately by Mark Ellis' 6th inning HR. It stayed 2-2 for a while whith nobody having a good chance until the home ninth. Damon singled and was bunted to second. Dunn grounded out and Nick Johnson walked. Rincon came in and balked the runners over, but got Gary Mathews on a grounder to second. More importantly, Rincon lined a single to right in the 10th. Dickey, shocked, then threw a wild pitch, allowed a game untying triple to Grady Sizemore, and Vinny Chulk threw a wild pitch to make it 4-2. 1-2-3 in the Cards' 10th, and Seoul wins the series 4 games to 2.
123 456 789 0 R H E MVP - Mark Ellis. Despite the more illustrious names in the lineup it was Ellis who did the damage: 11-22, 2 HRs, 7 runs scored. The Fighters had 13 homers in the series, 12 in their last 4 games. On the other side, Kissimmee managed but two, and never did rev up their offense, aside from smacking around a tired Jamie Moyer in the middle innings of game 4. It was a little odd seeing so much R.A. Dickey in the playoffs, especially in a leveraged situation in game 6, when the Cards' ace reliever, Scott Linebrink, had only pitched 1 inning in the series. |
