Game 1 - Dresden at Cambridge Kevin Millwood vs Roger Clemens IIBL's 1-2 in wins square off, both teams and pitchers, in the opening series. It's Clemens who has the early hiccup, walking Millwood with the bases loaded and two outs in the second. Rickie Weeks, a surprise starter, followed with an RBI hit to make it 2-0. The Blacks added a 3rd run in the 6th which they needed to retain the lead after Marcus Giles' 2 run 2 out single in the bottom of the 6th. Salomon Torres relieved Millwood after the hit, and, after an intentional walk, got Clemens to end the inning after an 11 pitch at bat. Giambi and Valentin hit late homers for the Blacks for insurance runs as the Blacks won going away, 6-3.

Game 2 - Dresden at Cambridge Radke pitched one of IIBL's best playoff games, limiting the Longfellows to just one baserunner, an 8th inning single by Victor Martinez. Even Russ Ortiz's no-hiter in the 2000 playoffs had come with three walks. The Blacks scored two in the first around Brian Giles' triple before a run was out, added solo runs in the 4th on Todd Walker's RBI single and Moises Alou's homer, and added a 3RHR by Valentin in the 8th, but the real story was Radke.

Game 3 -
Cambridge at Dresden Longfellows offensive woes continued, though they reached Garcia for 5 early hits and knocked out the Dresden starter following Colon's leadoff single in the 5th. The score was 1-1 in the Cambridge seventh, when Bobby Crosby walked and went to 3rd on Kenny Lofton's hit and run single. Lofton stole second, and after one out and an intentional walk, Vladdy Guerrero hit a sac fly to give Cambridge a 2-1 lead. Cambridge wasted an opportunity for more in the 8th when Jose Valverde got Manny Aybar with the bases loaded and 2 outs. It proved costly. In the home 8th, Vernon Wells led off with a double and the Longfellows went to John Foster. He got two outs before he hit Randa with a pitch. The next batter was Moises Alou, and he lined a double in the gap for two runs and the lead, and Todd Walker doubled in another. Billy Wagner finished up.

Game 4 -
Cambridge at Dresden The Blacks went for the sweep but the bats fell silent in Dresden, while the Longfellows bats awoke against Washburn. Andruw Jones hit Cambridge's first homer of the series, a 3 run shot to cap a 5 run 3rd, and the Blacks only managed 4 hits. Ryan Shealy broke up Myers' no hit bid in the 6th, and the Blacks got a single, a walk, and two groundouts to break the shutout in the 7th. Giambi hit a meaningless 2RHR in the 9th. Guerrero had three hits for the Longfellows.

Game 5 -
Cambridge at Dresden Rematch of game 1, featuring Clemens, 24-1 in the regular season, but 0-2 in the playoffs in three starts. Great pitching duel. Cambridge scored the only run of the game in the 5th when Marcus Giles singled, stole second, and scored on David Wright's two out single. The Blacks almost tied it in the 8th, but Ryan Freel was gunned down at the plate by Guerrero on Brian Giles' two out single in the 8th. Millwood allowed 4 hits and 3 walks in 7, striking out 12, while Clemens allowed 5 hits and 1 walk in his complete game win.

Game 6 - Dresden at Cambridge Blacks made three errors and allowed three homers. They worked the Cambridge pitching staff for 186 pitches but only managed one run, leaving 11 on base. The Blacks got their run in the first but left the bases loaded. Andruw Jones homered to tie it in the 2nd, and Mark Sweeney and Marcus Giles homered back to back in the fourth, after which Radke left with an injury. But after Radke left, the Blacks couldn't get a single hit, and succumbed 4-1.

Game 7 - Dresden at Cambridge Cambridge jumped out in front with a 2 run first, and Dresden got one back in the second. The game settled down until the 5th, when Todd Walker homered to tie it. It didn't last long. David Wright doubled with one out, and was doubled home by Matsui. Guerrero singled home another but was out trying to go home on the throw home. No matter. Victor Martinez singled, Justin Duchscherer came in to relieve, and that he didn't. Three singles later it was 6-2 and Neil Cotts had to get Wright with the bases loaded to escape further damage. But the Blacks were done. Aside from a meaningless Joe Randa homer, the Cambridge fans were in a riotous mood, having been the first IIBL team to win a series after being down 3 games to none.
123 456 789 R H E MVP - Vladimir Guerrero. Led the team at 9-27, but more important was the throw in game 5's eighth inning which preserved Clemens' 1-0 win. The Blacks stopped hitting over the last four games of the series, hitting just .164. Jhonny Peralta went 1-15 with 6 strikeouts in the last four games, symptomatic of the futility.

Game 2 - Seoul at
Scottsdale Suppan was skipped over in the Divisional Series, and he showed why in game 2, as Seoul scored early and often. Travis Hafner started the scoring with a 2RHR in the first, and Jonny Gomes homered in the 1st and 3rd as well. It was 9-0 after four, and Seoul coasted to a 13-5 win..

Game 3 - Scottsdale at Seoul The Cougars played poorly, getting just two hits and committing three errors, two of them back to back in the 6th that turned a 2-0 game into a 4-0 game. Haren also doubled and scored a run, while Jorge Posada led off the scoring with a solo shot in the 4th.

Game 4 - Scottsdale at Seoul More than 20 years age difference in the game four starters. Duke had a rocky first, allowing two out doubles by Chipper Jones and Wily Mo Pena that brought home 3 runs. He settled down after that, and Scottsdale chipped away, getting to 3-2 by the sixth. After a leadoff double, Matt Wise came in to get out of the inning and preserve the lead. Seoul extended on solo homers by Johnny Gomes and Mark Ellis, but the Cougars got two back in the 8th on Joe Mauer's shot. In the 9th, the Cougars got the leadoff batter on, but Scott Schoeneweiss came in and got Counsell to hit into a DP, and then retired Matt Lawton for the save.

Game 5 - Scottsdale at Seoul Cougars went back to game 1 starter, but Seoul, up 3 games to 1, went to Tomko, making his first appearance in the series. Gomes homered again, his 5th, with a man on in the first, and the 2-0 lead held up through the middle innings. Willis kept the Fighters hitless from the 3rd to the 8th, but Tomko had a 1 hitter through 6. In the 7th, a Carl Everett single brought up Tony Clark, and presto the game was tied. It stayed 2-2 into extra innings when Scottsdale pinchhitter Rafael Palmeiro singled in the go ahead run. Trevor Hoffman came in to convert the save, but allowed a pinchit single by Eric Hinske, a double by Grady Sizemore, and a sac fly to tie the game. When Travis Hafner doubled to start the home eleventh, Hoffman gave way to Al Reyes. A walk set up a double play, and Omar Vizquel dutifully grounded to second. Counsell to Barmes to ... er the dugout, Hafner scored and the Fighters went to the World Series.

E MVP - A fairly easy choice for the rookie Jonny Gomes. 5 homers in 14 AB, and 8 RBIs. Miguel Cabrera was the unsung hero, getting on base 14 times in the 5 games, but he didn't drive in any runs. Scottsdale bats fell silent after game one, and the heart of the lineup was largely to blame. Joe Mauer had 2 hits in 18 at bats, Tony Clark had only those two homers in 15 AB, and Garrett Atkins was a horrible 1-21. The Fighter pitching was pretty spread out, with Matt Wise pitching 4 one hit innings in high leverage relief. |
